Move Over , Dr Pepper
America's Most Misunderstood Soft Drink has something in common with Radiant Heating Systems. Which some electrical companys would have you believe are rife with difficulties and expenses, compared to Natural Gas systems--when exactly the opposite is the case.
Also some elctrical company wants you to believe that Radiant Heat will result in higher utility bills and additional costs.
Nothing could be father from the truth.
Let's look at the facts:
Radiant Heating systems address an aspect of thermal comfort that no other systwms do ; radiant heat transfer . The use of radiant heating can lead to energy savings because occupants usually feel comfortable at lower temperatures in spaces that are heated . In homes, occupants are often comforttable with air temperatures several degrees Fahrenheit (F) lower than would otherwise be possible.
In addition, some radiant heating systems make it possible for individual rooms, areas, or zones to be separately controlled, allowing comfort to be maintained at a lower average building temperature. The use of radiant heating can also reduce or eliminate the inefficiencies that result from the excessive air changes that can occur with poorly balanced force-air heating systems.
COMMENT : Our Radiant Ceiling System is Room By Room Controlled Thus heat energy is used only when and where and or needed. The spare room or bedroom can be set at 60(F). Each room can have a comfort temperature set in accordance to it's usage. Technological advances have produced Programmable Thermostats that set the energy usage of that room exactly to it's heating need. H ow much energy is saved is a function of the Life Style of the occupant. This freedom of choice is not available to the World House
Heat Pump user.
Electric radiant heaters transfer 58 to 90 percent of their heat as radiation, whereas gas-fired radiant heaters transfer 35 to 70 percent as radiation. However , because radiant heat must be delivered precisely when and where it is needed, the overall efficiency of radiant heating systems varies widely with heater design, reflector design, and resonse time.
COMMENT: Our Radiant Ceiling System is installed to cover the entire ceiling, or to parallel the heat loss wall.
RESPONE TIME : Years ago ceiling elements was as thick as your little finger, and was stapled up, and covered with " plaster, a scratch coat, a finish coat. Before, there was a heat transfer. That mass had to be brought up to and above room temperature. Thus,a slow response. Our element now is as thin as the lead in your Ever-sharp and covered with coat of paint like gypsum. The response time approaches zero. As soon as the ceiling temperature is above room temperature there is radiation. The time for the whole room to reach thermostat setting depends upon the ceiling element wattage installed.
Think about maintenance requirements. Maintenance and associated costs are virtually nonexistent with electric radiant heating panels. These units have no pumps, blowers, compressors, or burners to fail, and there are no filters to change. They operate with hardly any attention throughout their useful life. And if a panel does fail, it can quickly and easily be replaced, often with an interruption of an hour or less.
COMMENT : Ceiling element reached it's peak usage about 25 years ago. Most of those ancient systems are still in use and are still operating at 100 % efficiency. Not a dime has been spent for maintenance or repairs. Well maybe a thermostat was replaced. I have a question for Florida Power & Light. How many of those heat pumps that you are recommending are going to be in operation in 2o28 ? And how much will be spent to keep them in operation ?
COMMENT : The ceiling is the ideal place to have the heat, there is complete freedom of furniture placement. You can put the couch or love seat in front of the glass wall and enjoy the view as the radiant heating system warms you and the glass.
As outdoor temperatures drop, the radiant temperature of walls and windows also decreases, which adds to the sensation of being cold even when the thermostat is set at what would normally be a comfortable temperature. Radiant heating panels can increase the temperature of inside surfaces of the building envelope, making occupants feel more comfortable at lower thermostat settings.
One reason that radiant heating systems aren't more widely used in commerical settings is that their performance has not been as throughly investigated and documented as the performance of other heating technologies.
Since Edison invented the electric light bulb, the electric way has always been the better way. but rarely the least expensive way. We at one time lighted our homes with candles, and oil lamps. That certainly was a much cheaper way than using electricity. we at one time had that sad iron you put on the stove to be heated. That has been replaced by the electric iron. We used to sweep with a broom, now we use a vacuum cleaner. We used to wash our dishes by hand, and now we have the dishwasher. Rarely does anybody use the old scrubbing board to do their laundry. They use the washer and , have you seen anybody take all are clothes out of the washer and hang it on a line to dry. Now they use the electric clothes dryer. Our lifesyles is based upon the extensive use of electric energy.
The Case for Radiant Heat :
Concerning the objections raised to the installation of radiant ceiling element , all are wrongheaded. Here's why:
The conditions under which ceiling elements are installed are the same as those for any other heating system. The only caveat is that the material covering the element is water-based and therefore must be applied in temperatures above freezing. Other than that, the system can be installed in any temperature suitable for a workman to perform his tasks. Finally, heating systems are installed near the end of the building process anyway , so unless the labor is required during a cold snap in the dead of winter when the temperature inside the building is below freezing, temperature restrictions are minimal.
On our most prominet installations, for example,at the John Hancock Building and Water Tower Place, spacer strips were attached directly to the concrete slab with zero problems.
Application is obviously and appropriately limited to interior ceilings but NOT necessarily over 1/2" gypsum drywall. (thermocote)
Ceiling elements can be installed on gypsum wallboard of any thickness suitable for the spacing support system, or even directly on bare concrete. Only a wood surface or insulated tile would prevent the installation of ceiling element.
Installation Strips are NOT necessarily affixed to ceiling with contact cement. ( See Above )
Ventilation requirements are NOT a concern.
Adequate ventilation is required by humans in order to breath and to install ceiling element, true , no matter the season of the year, just as it would be required when installing any other heating system. Nevertheless, the material covering the element will set rock-hard within 45-90 minutes, although complete removal of moisture from the material may take longer,a relatively minor concern surely. It is also a disadvantage of paint, one supposes, that it takes some time to dry.
The design and adequacy of the system IS PRE-DETERMINED by the calculated heat loss of the structure.
No more heat will be needed than that originally designed using other resistance heating systems.
Resistance heat does NOT have a low recovery rate.
Any heat system that uses electricity ia a resistance heater. To say " Resistance " heat has a very low recovery rate " is simply not true. Anyone who understands the characteristics of radiant heat knows better than that. The response of a radiant heating system is determined by surface temperature. If you were to set the thermostat at 72 degrees in a room in which the temperature is 65 degrees, the system would heat the ceiling to 72 degrees and you would feel the transfer of energy enven before the room temperature reached 72.
Consider this analogy. It is springtime and you are sitting in the cool shade of an old apple tree. The temperature of the are there is 65 degrees, too cold for your taste. So you move out from under the shade of the apple tree into the bright sunshine. Immediately your body absorbs the radiant energy of the sun and you are comfortably warm.
The same thing happens in a room heated by radiant ceiling element. The energy is transformed by radiation into our bodies. Ceiling Element performs the same function as the sun in the apple orchard on a bright day in spring.
Letter to a Luxury Home Builder:
I read with interest the newspaper article on your plans to build luxury homes and apartments here. I myself enjoy the luxuries of this relaxing community at my home.
If you would care to drop by for a visit,I would be happy to show you what I mean. While the home itself is in every way comfortable and well-appointed , there is one particular feature I would point out to you, with an eye toward your own project.
That is the heating and cooling system. Surely your notion of luxury will extend to the climate. Conventional wisdom usually resorts to conventional means: through-the -wall air conditioning units with strip heaters, as you might find at the Holiday Inn. But that is no one's idea of luxury.
My idea of luxury is maximum comfort along with an automatic transition from heating to cooling as conditions dictate . One system out performs all the rest, offering room to room programming electric radiant ceilin element. Best of all, the cost is maximum cooling effectiveness and minimum noise.
Radiant heat is, simply put, an invisible heating system that allows for room-by- room control and a warmth beyond the means of aall other systems. There is no draft,no blowers, the warmest places in the room are the floor and the ceiling, and there is no noise. Aesthetically the heating system disappears into the architectural design. Luxury ? It's the warm feeling you have.
This is luxury, I know from personal experience and a hand in it's design, that you will find a Water Tower Place in Chicago, where luxury and efficiency are the by-words.
So I urge you to give me a call (386) 752-5097 and come by for a visit to see the system in action. I look forward to hearing from you .
Cordially,
